Virginia school greenhouse full of flowers

Updated in 2024 (originally publised in 2012). Last August, we received   message from the agriculture teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur High School in Buckhannon, West Virginia.  Both of their 24×96′ school greenhouses (that were covered with polyfilm at the time) had sustained wind damage. They wanted to replace the greenhouse covering with something stronger and longer-lasting.  We connected them with their local Solexx dealer, who went on site to assist the school with their project. What’s more, even the students pitched in to help install the Solexx greenhouse covering.

Student Learning and Supporting a Flourishing Greenhouse Business

At Buckhannon-Upshur, students in the FFA program work in the greenhouse as part of their coursework. They help plan, plant and maintain the greenhouse throughout the year. For example, one task is to feed the plants with fish fertilizer. As you can see in the images below, the plants flourish in the greenhouse with the amazing talent of the program director and students.

Fundraising in The School Greenhouse

What are their secrets to a successful school greenhouse program? For starters, the vegetable seedlings, gorgeous bedding flowers, and hanging baskets are sold in the spring to the community. This year (2024), the hanging baskets sold for $25 each! Additionally, the students sell Mum plants in the fall to raise money. Overall, the money raised helps to support greenhouse programs for next years students.

Skills for the Future

All in all, the students gain valuable business, horticulture, and leadership skills. These practical skills help bolster their future careers and provide hands-on experience in agriculture and business management. On the whole, the program is a huge success!
